English Heritage has announced plans to break a world record few knew needed breaking: it wants to stage the world’s largest gathering of people dressed as a vampire.

The setting will be Whitby Abbey, the dramatically atmospheric 13th century gothic abbey that helped inspire Bram Stoker to write the classic novel which this year is 125 years old.

I've never been to Whitby. Is it like Cleethorpes?

I've been to Cleethorpes.

And Mablethorpe.

And Skegness.

And Scarborough.

I would assume it must be like them because it's in the same place as them.

I'm going to guess it's most like Scarborough.

"Scarborough," always sounds like a placename from HP Lovecraft.

Then again, so does Skegness.

Cleethorpes doesn't.

Nor does Mablethorpe.

It's near to the heady lights of the megatropolis of Littlehampton.

I have been to Whitby, it's charming. Close in to the shore it's all flat rock so on a sunny day you can wade out for hundreds of yards in nice warm water. Further off though, the sea off that part of the coast is very deep.

I remember many a happy summer evening standing on the cliffs or harbour walls and looking out over the North Sea in the gathering August dusk.
