Masha and Dasha were conjoined twins born in the Soviet Union in 1950. Down to the hips they were two seperate people but they shared legs; one twin controlled one leg.
I read about them last night and I think their memory should be shared. Their mother was informed of their condition but several hours after their birth she was told they had died of pneumonia. They had in fact been handed over to doctors who conducted years of cruel experiments on them. After being shuffled between various hospitals their plight become known to the wider world in the late 80s.
Sadly Dasha went on to develop alcoholism which affected both twins due to their shared blood supply. They were reconnected with their birth mother but the relationship eventually fell apart. Masha suffered a fatal heart attack in 2003; Dasha died 17 hours later due to blood poisoning.
