No, you pair of clots - I've never been to Japan.

I was just in the South Downs and happened to have a pair of exceptionally good macro-lenses on my Boots disposable camera. yes

Ooh, photos of the Chicago skyline from Indiana Dunes seems to be a thing.

They must be taken from nearby this delightful-looking spot.

Not far from Gary, Indiana where the Jacksons are from.

I'm sure I once read somewhere that on a very clear day Blackpool Tower can be seen from Cannock Chase.

I've since tried to verify that once-read claim but have been unable to.

So basically you can see the skyscrapers in the centre of a city from its outskirts? amazeballs. And it's not 50 miles. It's less to drive the long way around.

More of a "continuous conurbation" (across different states). But I get your point.

Yes, I was disappointed to discover how close Indiana Dunes was to Chicago.

According to my calculations the curvature of the Earth would make that impossible. Even from the highest bit of Cannock Chase (236m), the Blackpool Tower would have to be 520 metres tall to be visible.

If the Earth was flat though, you might be able to see it as there don't seem to be any hills higher than Cannock in the line of sight.

Indiana is, by all accounts, an absolute hell on earth in every possible way a place can be. I should imagine the distant skyline of somewhere else emerging through clouds and haze is the only thing Indianans have to look forward to. Other than the sweet release of death in Walmart - either from all the general bad living catching up with you, or because an ex employee has gone postal while you’re bathing in rummaging about in the ice cream vat aisle.

Kurt Vonnegut was from Indiana.

He always had nice things to say about it.
