I have recently learned that, if you stand facing away from a sunset, you can see the Earth's shadow being cast upon the sky.

You certainly can see the shadow. But it's hard to distinguish it from thin dark clouds/haze.

I went to Hainault Woods today.

On the way back the Sun was a smouldering ball of blood orange gloriousness in a clear violet-grey sky.

Reminded me of on my 8th birthday.
