Earlier today, while giving my compost caddy its weekly cleanse with boiling water, I accidentally scalded my right big toe joint.

It hurt for a while then came up in a blister. But just now, while idly shuffling my feet while idly surfing the internet, I accidentally burst the blister!

I've been told that that's the worst thing you can do to a burn. So I quickly washed the foot in question under the bath taps, then put lots of TCP on the blisterburst site.

So now my survival is in the lap of the gods

Oh dear. Thoughts are with you. I too understand finding out you've done completely the wrong thing. When I had shingles I had a long steam bath with a whole bottle of Neal's Yard pure lavender oil poured in. Apparently you need to keep things dry and away from all scents and oils.

I'm not very knowledgeable about burns. The sum total of my knowledge comes from news reports of Princess Margaret drunkenly scalding her feet in a Mustique bath after a maid had buggered around with the thermostat. If it's any consolation, I think she was dead within a couple of years so she didn't suffer for very long in the grand scheme of things.

I did once put my hand on top of a hob, for balance, forgetting that it was on full blast. It must've been so hot that I wasn't even fully aware until smoke appeared. That was really pretty sore in the days after.

The name has always been dirt in my family. Ever since my grandparents flight was diverted to Barbados (the nearest to Mustique apparently) to pick HRH up, and she staggered on, bladdered, with a policeman and a lady, without apologizing for the five hour detour and humid delay on the runway.

Although I've felt more kindly about her since watching The Crown. I thought her breakdown scenes to music were very well done.

I've had absolutely my fill of today I can tell you. I just tried to put a bleach block in the cistern and the f***ing silver circle thing won't turn.

I've called a friend who's a sound engineer for various theatres etc, because he must know about such things and have working tools, and now I'm waiting in (and up) for him to finish work and get the f***ing lid off.

I've also just found out that plumbago auriculata does not survive UK winters. So my third attempt, now bringing joy in terracotta pots, is for the grave as well as last years and the year before.

I thought I'd done something terribly wrong last year and spent a fair amount of time on self reflection, examining my behaviour vis a vis the universe and my dead pride (I should add, at no point did that patronizing tw*t suggest it was climate related as opposed to a personal failing. I knew I was right to be wary of CBT). I bought it a fleece blanket for winter, huddled both together for company, poured boiling kettle water around the pot bases. They still ended up as a couple of dead twigs that I replaced in good faith.

The site is itching like b*ggery now. Which I sem to remember is a good sign with burns and other injuries.

My left hand:

I was making tomato rice yesterday evening, and the pan of passata began to bubble and spit. Before I could turn it down, an ejected globule of boiling hydro/tomato effluvium plopped onto my arm!

I washed it off but it was too late to prevent a round pink scald mark from appearing.

In other news, at least my scalded foot's getting better.

After 4 weeks my foot is starting to look healed. I shall certainly be more careful with boiling water in future.

I was in such a hurry to tuck into a delicious bowl of instant mashed potato earlier that I mixed it too vigorously, and slopped boiling hydro/starch effluvium onto my hand and thigh!

My thigh was merely reddened but I had to run my hand under cold water for ages, and it still hurts.

My hand feels better now, thank you, and my thigh has gone back to its usual colour.

It's a bad one.

I badly got things wrong.
