Re: Lou Reed - Berlin (1973)
Stephen Davis, in a December 1973 review for Rolling Stone, felt the album was a "disaster"; he disliked the world of "paranoia, schizophrenia, degradation, pill-induced violence and suicide" that the album introduced to the listener, and disliked Reed's "spoken and shouted" performance.
Robert Christgau in a February 1974 review for Creem felt that the story about "two drug addicts who fall into sadie-mazie in thrillingly decadent Berlin" was "lousy" and the music was "only competent".

Perhaps we should do Sally Can't Dance instead?

Does anyone actually know this album before we listen to it BTW?

Re: Lou Reed - Berlin (1973)
Look, OK then.
I went through a brief Lou Reed phase, but then got over it and came to the conclusion that he's a kind of charlatan.
That said, there are a lot of albums and songs by him I love, but he's very difficult to like bother as person and storyteller and many of his albums and individual songs and (especially lyrics) are risible and beneath contempt.
Insulting even.
This album however is arguably (me arguing with myself basically) one of the 10-or-so best albums ever created.
It's an titanic success.
A bone fide masterpiece.
Ergo, I fear none of your criticism.
It is what it is.

In fact it's so good that, after a long period passing wherein I've not listened to it all all, I'm thoroughly thrilled to experience it again.

Tom Waits was only 3 when this came out.
He looked 50 though.

It doesn't get any more cheerful than this BTW.
