What I'm trying to do is locate each album that was a source of, or springboard into entire genres encompassing multiple artists.

That or something that turned me in a whole new direction - a watershed album.

At present four are from my very early life up to 6 years old - records belonging to my Mum.

Each one acted as a doorway into certain genres of music that I still like today.

I have now assembled my list based on those criteria.

Except that 8 of the 10 introduced me to single-artist genres.

Completely impossible. As I think I've said before, it's a rare album I can fully enjoy. That's like spending the entire day looking at the works of one artist - a handful of times it's a treat, but 99/100 you just want a bit of a mix. I'm not much of a purist in anything.

Actually, I would also like to take part. I'm now selecting my ten albums.

I'll have 11 contributions in total due to beginning with this song. A feature of my life since I was a kid, and saw her perform it for the first time in a private session at Stringfellows. I've always considered it something of an accidental personal soundtrack.

On the last great occasion it played, I was at an attic apartment/drag bar in Brussels, after a decisive public fight with a Mexican lover who declared Republican Party membership at a louche but intelligent dinner party I had taken him to.

He openly sneered at my invited contributions on matters like Russian sanctions and the public health crisis in West Africa, and stated he would hate for his mother to know he was seeing a braindead and godless Eurotrash divorcee.

Dusty (in spirit) and the drag queens understood. The night was saved.
