| Sounds very like an REM track that was on Green. I think it was called I Remember California. _________________ |

| Since that daft It's Good to be Clean track the album has become weirdly morose and gothic. _________________ Have you ever seen a Squonk's tears?

| It is over. Apart from the last track, it was a very generic 1960s album. It wasn't bad but there was little in it to distinguish it from a zillion and one other bands that were around at the time. Now to look back at the thread and see what everybody else made of it. _________________ |

| Anyway, I like(d) it.
It's too slight and brief however to leave much of an impression.
The gloomy, dark tracks 'Black Hair' and 'Serenade' are the best tracks, but it bears pointing out that the first track - an early R&B dance number about being "The Greatest Dancer" is quite deceptive, considering what comes later - and especially towards the end the album. _________________ Have you ever seen a Squonk's tears?

To misquote Gary Numan.
What did I mean by that? Well that's the nub, You know when you listen to, hang on, Let's compare Please Please Me to Abbey Road, you may enjoy the first album, but unlike Abbey Road it feels of another time, more of historical interest than part of what even under a very broad description could be called contemporary music. This feels more like it could be 1930s jazz foxtrot, it's probably fine for what is it, rusted. Of historical interest only. Not for enjoyment, but for archivists. Blimey how strong is this Cider? 8.2%

| Ultimately, it has to be seen in light of the era.
Record labels were hiring and firing bands like them at a rate of knots, forcing them to churn out sub-30 minute LPs...
They're a subtly influential band BTW, despite being considered an archetypal one-hit-wonder.
I wonder if the darker material was what the band where more interested in doing?
Basically, the stuff that they :squirrel: :squirrel: away on side 2 of the album. _________________ Have you ever seen a Squonk's tears?
