Bill Oddie being one of the only ever people to initially refuse to appear on This Is Your Life. I remember seeing this at the time.

I’d refuse too. I hated everything about it. The theme tune, the studio set, the lighting, the presenters, the self indulgent C list mawkishness of the whole thing. Having to sit there smiling while people you’d met a few times decades ago paid tribute as if you were dead. The whole concept is just unspeakable. Even if they’d livened it up from time to time by having someone appear to say ‘yeah I remember her well, what a bitch’, but they never did. It was just something to be got through before whatever was on after.

It was just basically a funeral. A televised funeral for a living person. Horrible. By the time an episode was over, you felt the same as if you’d emerged from back row of a crematorium.

What use would anyone have for an old book of bull about how great you are, replete with anecdotes about the time you made everyone cups of tea backstage at Crewe Theatre.
