Signpost extravaganza
I believe this is perhaps the highest amount of miles featured on a UK signpost, from just outside of Exeter on the A30 - declaring: London 166.

Re: Signpost extravaganza
But it seems if the sign for London I've seen around the start of the M1 near Leeds also included the miles, it would beat that at about 195 miles.

Re: Signpost extravaganza
I'm sure I've seen a 204 somewhere, maybe on the M6 going north (Glasgow 204?)

I've been up and down the M6 many times over the years and never seen one that high! 100ish miles to Glasgow, definitely, around Carlisle. I just did a quick test and in theory a sign that says 204 miles to Glasgow would be somewhere around Warrington.

Ooh, a mileage sign to Carlisle and London in the same spot.

Re: Signpost extravaganza
On my travels to Blackpool over the years it has surprised me on my way home to see Birmingham listed on the M55 motorway signs just outside of the town, here at 120 miles:
One might have expected somewhere like Stoke-on-Trent or even Stafford to be on there instead as they're sizable settlements on the M6 before you get to Birmingham.

Re: Signpost extravaganza
I'm sure I also remember years ago seeing a mileage sign for Birmingham on the M25 to the west of London, at I think exactly 100 miles.
EDIT: 106 miles.

Re: Signpost extravaganza
Because I'm bored and have got nothing better to do on this thrillingly wet bank holiday Monday, I thought I'd see where the first mention of Sheffield is on the M1. These mileage signs are usually a short distance after a major junction, so finding them isn't quite as laborious as one may think.
It seems the furthest one heading north is Sheffield 74 miles, near Lutterworth, to the south of Leicester.
But coming from the north I've struggled to find one more than just 23 miles.

It's a miracle there's even any signs mentioning Sheffield

Sheffield 44 - from just outside of Lincoln.

Re: Signpost extravaganza
My mum came in while I was reading this thread and she said the subject was an interesting one.
I believe that makes this the first NHOTW thread to be officially endorsed by a poster's parent.

I believe the port of Harwich isn't a million miles away from you, here it is signposted at 145 miles on the A14 in between Rugby and Kettering.
I remember passing this sign nearly 25 years ago and I hadn't got a clue where Harwich or Felixstowe were.

Re: Signpost extravaganza
Unless people are international lorry drivers, or frequently visit Holland, they typically don't come far to visit Harwich or Felixstowe, it's true.
The A14 is deceptively long and only has two lanes on each side. I'm sometimes tempted to come home from the north that way, and I always regret it, because I always end up stuck behind a lorry for about 50 miles, unable to edge out into the overtaking lane to get past it.
And it has several vaguely sinister junctions which only go to a farm or an estate, and you get the idea that you'd be very unwise to turn off there.

Re: Signpost extravaganza
I think I've only ever been on the A14 twice, but I know it has a notorious reputation for lorries overtaking at slow speeds.
50mph lorry vs 50mph lorry = huge tailback.

Re: Signpost extravaganza
I just randomly happened upon an old long-distance signpost on the side of the road in downtown Shrewsbury, with two sides to it:

What exactly is a "vaganza" and why do we need more of them?
