You can see it with the naked eye if you know where to look. At magnitude 3.4 it's not a difficult spot*. It doesn't look like it does in that photo of course, it's just an oval blur.
Magnitude primer for the uninitiated:
6 Theoretical limit of naked eye visibility (on a very dark night right out in the country)
5.5 Dimmest star I've ever managed to see with the naked eye
5 Visible on a dark night from your back garden if you get well night-adapted
4 The stars you're seeing when you think 'Ooh it's a starry night' but aren't particularly trying
3 The best you'll do on a hazy night with suburban light pollution. All the stars in the Plough are mag 3 or brighter
2 The Pole Star
0 The first stars you'll see coming out in the evening
-1 Sirius, the brightest star in the sky
-4 Visible in daylight - Venus at its brightest
-12 the Full Moon
-27 the Sun
*Yes, I agree that a galaxy spread out over several degrees will look dimmer than a star of the same magnitude concentrated into a point. But you can still see it

Splendid stuff Zarni. They're a lot more common nowadays I believe.
What's the bright object - Jupiter?

I'd like to see some much larger images.
Can you upload them in higher resolution?

Re: The Outer Space thread
When they installed LED streetlights in Sheffield, the council said we'd be able to see the stars better.
It has made no difference.

It's so serious that I'd say it repeatedly but we all know that if you say its name five times, it appears in your house.

I think that is an old vid, last I heard was that it is getting brighter now.
