I insisted my son invite his new date round - I wish I hadn't. She arrived with a hanging basket as a gift. It's made of some kind of straw, has three metal chains attached to a hook, and contains patchoulias of a garish pink/purple shade. I hate hanging baskets. I think what's happened is she's asked what I might like and, to annoy me, he's told her I'd love a hanging basket. I'll ask for an explanation when he returns later. I suspect this may be some kind of revenge for my getting on too well with the last one, when I found out she was a Timothée Chalamet fan.

It could've been worse. It could've been daffodils.

She made an effort.

How old is she - 12?

Don't be such a mardy moo, CT.

You'll be trying to compete with her about who's the bigger Timothy Chaletgirl fan next.

Mind yourself - trying to slyly compete with a child is a very bad idea (and reflects poorly on you).

As if I need to tell you. Colbert

She's 14. It was the last one that was the fellow fan. I am always in a scathing mood when speaking about the world - it's what allows me to be so lovely and friendly during the rest of my waking existence.

I wish I'd spotted the refugee thread before posting something so ungrateful.

That said, I still don't want the f***ing thing.

Although I no longer have a garden of my own, I am free to appreciate my parents' garden, which has roses in dark pink, light pink, white, yellow and raspberry ripple, and sparrows flying about and a blackbird singing.

After years of struggling to use my flymo on a ridiculously steep patch of garden, it's suddenly occurred to me that I don't actually have to mow it. I could just leave that area to grow wild and designate it as a, "mini-meadow."

Admittedly, it only occurred to me because, last night, YouTube suddenly started recommending videos to me about the desirability of leaving areas of your lawn to grow wild.

Regardless, it is what I shall do.

That's not a bad idea. Depending on the shape of the lawn you could always mow a pathway through the middle of any "mini-meadow".

Why not scatter some seeds and see which ones take? You may as well experiment, you could end up with an attractive floral meadow, or even a few things that can be eaten.

Speaking of eating things out of the garden, I trimmed a patch of mint the other day, and rather than just chucking it in the green bin I immediately ate some of it.

My mother was over here while I was out, with her boyfriend. He apparently decided that my cherished and nurtured lavender plants were looking 'too full', so he cut them all down to the wooden roots just above the soil level. They'll never grow back.

Each of those terracotta potted lavenders signify a person no longer with me, and I especially love watching the bees going about their work there.

When I realized what had been done, I was speechless with shock. Then I was very upset. Then I rang in tears but she refused to let me speak to him about his savagery, although I could tell he was there. I'm still now very angry.

I've had to buy several new lavender bushes, and I suppose the previously established ones will just have to be binned. There's probably as much chance of them coming back to life as there is to find new leaves appearing on a chest of drawers.

The lavender replacements have arrived. I'll be about 43 by the time they've reached the extent of those that were savaged. Still no apology. If it was me that had done such a thing I'd bend over backwards to make it as right as possible.

His upbringing, I've learned, was strictly Protestant Northern Irish, so that explains his lack of aesthetic appreciation or how beauty can tie up with sentiment, but it doesn't explain the disgraceful lack of remorse that's been displayed here.

I hacked at the laurel hedge earlier. It's probably about 10ft tall and I had to get up on the top step of the step ladder and nervously lop off some of the thicker branches as the step ladder occasionally wobbled. The green bin is now overflowing with laurel leaves, with surplus branches stacked up awaiting an empty green bin in over a week's time.

I think I did quite a good job, despite the terrifying heights. happy
