He's playing kazoo.
It's very low in the mix.
Like Stephane Grappelli on the end of Wish You Were Here.

The balance of the sound has improved over the course of the album. It seems they finally knew how to twiddle their knobs by the end.

This is going to be a mediocre ending.

Well, that was all thoroughly.... mediumwhelming. Some bad points but also some good points. I've never been that keen on Life in a Northern Town and I preferred a couple of the other songs, one being genuinely highly enjoyable.
But the rest was a bit , though acceptably so.
3/5

Over.
What an odd album. It starts off, and I'm like this is going to be the big hit and a load of meh, ** all the way, then it gets good, gets to a song I've never heard of with a video, and it's bad, and the whole 'o side 2 is like bad, like really bad 80s. Well, maybe not 'really' bad but…
** in the end.

Re: The Dream Academy - The Dream Academy (1985).
It is over.
It was hard to have an opinion about it because the sound mix was so bad it was difficult to hear the tracks properly but it was too reminiscent of other bands who were around at the time and weren't interesting, such as Prefab Camera and Aztec Sprout.
Now to look back at the thread and see what everybody else made of it.
