This middle-eight-y bit is so brilliant.
The song's like something off of Re-Actor.
And I mean that in a good way.

We really do need to do that album some time.
I think that it's cruelly underrated.

The epic, raggedly majestic centrepiece of the album.

Re: Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Zuma (1975)
I think he may have been lyrically a bit naive with this song.
It's like a number of the songs on Bob Dylon's 'Desire" in that respect.
Although, unlike the aforementioned tracks, this one is set in the 16th Century.

Re: Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Zuma (1975)
In Jimmy McDonough's biography of Young, Shakey, Young stated: "What the f*ck am I doing writing about Aztecs in 'Cortez the Killer' like I was there, wandering around?
'Cause I only read about it in a few books.
A lotta sh*t I just made up because it came to me."

Re: Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Zuma (1975)
Rolling Stone later criticized the song's view of the Aztec Empire as "dead wrong".
