At 3.30 this morning I was awakened by an unearthly squawking and screeching, as if the Witch-king was descending on our street riding a huge undead seagull. Up and down the street went the noise, while I cowered in bed, not even daring to look out through the curtains in case the powers of evil spotted me.
Then it stopped and I was able to lie awake terrified for 90 minutes before getting up.
Given the time of year, foxes were a possibility but I didn't hear any running-about noises. And the fox noise is more like a woman wailing than a seagull squawking.

It may have been a barn owl. They do like a good screech.

That was the sound I heard, but it was more continuous, like a seagull.
I have heard owls to-whooing from time to time, but not this screeching.

The ones that go to-whooing are tawny owls.

Good point, what I heard on the to-whoo occasion was actually just 'Wh-wh-wh-whoooooooooooo'.
That was very calming though, knowing that owls were hard at work protecting me from killer mice, voles, shrews etc.
Not like the hellish undead screeching last night.

I still don't believe that we discount the theory that it was Nyarlathotep riding aback a rugose, dead-eyed Byakhee accompanied by a pack of slavering, loathsome, ichor-spewing Hounds of Tindalos.

Or a strawberry seed crazed flock of killer canaries.

Could it be a couple of new residents were having a sh*g? Some people are very inelegant during. The timings, the never before heard element, and the two distinct parts to the cacophony make me think this is a strong possibility.

I kind of hope the noises I heard weren't coming from humans. Particularly not humans in the throes of o*g*sm.

Maybe it was a fox and a barn owl making whoopy?

Stop it all of you. If it happens again tonight I'll have all these images, Nyarlathotep, killer canaries, the Witch-king on his seagull, Ishtar avatar, and fox/owl/human s*x, thronging my fevered consciousness.

Luckily I've taken on board 3 high quality whisky miniatures which were in the post-Christmas bargain bin in Tescos, and am consequently free of all fear

I still think it's likely a couple of humans of the Essex variety. If it happens again, fling the window open and scream 'shut the f*ck up'. In my experience, both animal and human sources of noise will cease immediately, but animals will soon enough get back to the previous level. Humans won't. Then you'll know.
