Forestiere Underground Gardens (and house), Fresno, California
http://www.undergroundgardens.com
"In addition to his unique building methods, the humble immigrant was also able to plant multiple varieties of fruit-bearing trees and vines, up to 20 feet underground! Orange, lemon and grapefruit trees were planted throughout his underground gardens - many varieties growing together on the same tree! Forestiere also grew more unusual varieties like kumquat, loquat, jujube, carob, quince and dates as well as wine and table grapes."

Nothing quite like a peaceful stream in the garden to cool the air and relax beside on a summer afternoon.
A back of house in Bristol. Very attractive I think, might inspire/repulse Helium of that parish...

Suffolk pink.
Why bother?
A planning permission requisite?
...if we gut this period property, with its low ceilings and mildewy 'charm', and put in a swimming pool and a 30-level games-dungeon and a panopticon eagle's nest turret but paint it a regionally accepted quaint colour can we gut this period property and put in a swimming pool and a 30-level games-dungeon etc?
CT, you seem to refuse to see glossy nonsense when you see it.
Too many dog-eared copies of House & Garden in GP waiting rooms...

Well I think it's a pretty house. It doesn't look like a showhouse gutted by the tacky lucky to me. I believe I've included a diversity of houses here - just on this page there is an underground garden cave house in California, a terraced house in Bristol, and a standard Greek bungalow.
House & Garden has been one of my favourite magazines since I was a teenager. On the monthly Thursday it hit the stands, I used to treat myself to an afternoon tea after I'd bought my copy. That's where I'd read Susan Crewe's always thoughtful and enthusiastic editors letter, and have my first cover to cover flick through. There's nowt wrong with simple pleasures.

As further defence, there's nothing wrong with glossy. Life is so often the opposite, we can all do with as much gloss as humanly possible in our particular life chapters and the environments they play out in. Who wants to be depressed and done down all the time? Superficiality has its valuable place in the pantheon of pleasure.
