This is the kind of song that should be about 1 minute 50 seconds.
A coda of bittersweet brevity.

I'm not sure what mark to give this.
The Actual songs were good. A bit too 70s singer songwriter, a bit too music theatre, but good.
But the whole was a behemoth that wore me out by the half hour mark.

It is over.
I felt that all the songs on it were good - and some were great - but too many of them were in the same vein, and they all seemed to have the same string arrangement, meaning it became a bit of a feat of endurance in its second half. I also missed the sense of humour that's been apparent in her lyrics in the past. I shall give it 4 stars, as its individual components are excellent but it lacks the variety and lightness of touch of her earlier albums.
Maybe we should do You Gotta Sin to Get Saved at some point? That's a much lighter and more fun album and is so unlike this one, it's hard to credit it's the work of the same woman.

It's also a lot shorter.

I'd imagine if you put the time into this, sat down and read all the lyrics listened to a lot, it could end up being the best album eva.
Alas it's not 1974 and people ain't no got time for that any more.

There also seemed to be a lack of humour. Or at least one I could find.
Gash, lol.

Could be. She's written about him before.

This is the first one of these to reach 10 pages.
Then it's the only album that went on for 3 hours.

Crikey.
Well...
Crikey.
Did I already say that?
Crikey.
Pretty good - you could say self-indulgent - but then again you could reasonably argue that any artist with her experience, obvious talent and drive is entirely entitled to create an album about anything they want and, if their label's OK with it, as long as they want.
I think I'll be revisiting the record, song by individual song.
Joni Mitchell, who I hold in the highest esteem and affection, never sought to cram so much into a single album - Don Juan's Reckless Daughter apart (but even that LP was languorusly
