Steely Dan or Greasy Flan?
Re: Steely Dan - Can't Buy a Thrill (1972)
It is over.
That was a very proficient and technically impressive album that was, perhaps, a little hard to warm to in places. I felt its two most famous tracks are irresistible but I also felt the album began to lose its way in its final quarter.
Now to look back at the thread and see what everyone else made of it.

It was no where near as bad as I'd feared.
Except the last song. That was.
But it was so incredibly 70s. Wendykins was right, that first track was the best
I went for ★★ but it was closer to a ★★★ than I was expecting.

It's an incredibly confident first record for a bunch of kids more than half my age.
That cannot be discounted when evaluating its various pros and cons.
Just like Talking Book.
They were in their early 20s when they did that.
Loads of really great AOR tunes and two nailed on hits destined to stand the test of time and still get airtime today.
There were of course a few hiccups and/or falterings, but they eliminated those almost before the record had been pressed.
It has to be ★★★★★, sheer chutzpa and virtuoso precocity alone making up for any faults.
