I'm very sorry you're having to do this before catching four buses home to a shed of multiple occupation in zone 147, but I'm not paying you a fiver for a spritz of your Be Beyoncé or J Lo Glow, I just want to wash my hands while checking my make up in peace. And I can work a paper towel dispenser perfectly well myself, so you needn't try getting a pound coin for seizing the chance to do it for me, practically throwing your body between it and myself.

Speaking of the perils of flip flops in foreign places and spaces, I bought a navy cotton pair on a whim and was wearing them when I ended up in a market/slaughter area in Niamey. Rivers of p*ss were the least of it. I abandoned them and went without.

I remember the toilets in Jeddah airport being especially grim. I think it was more shocking as the airport, whilst far from great, wasn't a total dive elsewhere on site, and it thus was so jarring; like Luton airport one end, and a slaughter house but with Satan's lemonade everywhere at the other. Oh, and long queues, so you were stuck standing in Satan's lemonade even longer than you had to. Imagine if you had to backside torpedo?

Meanwhile Riyadh airport was the height of civility

I can't think of any 'wow' public lavz in Bristol, although we've still got a few pissoirs dotted around. Far prettier and more dignified than those public grey things they haul out on a weekend evening.

Old pissoirs do look great, but they smell absolutely extraordinary in hot countries. There's an enormous one aluminium one next to the Club Med in Marrakech.

I find the plastic ones where you can see the back and sides of the person really disgusting, completely unnecessary savagery. Go discreetly on the top deck of a bus like everyone else, if you must.
