Well, perhaps it's one of those albums that deserves a casual background listen or two?
Sometimes stuff sinks in and you start to dig/get into it.
I wouldn't call it lacklustre or half-hearted at all, bit it does have a very bleak, sparse quality.
Anyway, here's the undeniably awesome version of "Hard Times" by Gene Chandler.
You might've'd liked the record if it was all like this.

I'm all in favour of slow songs - some of my best friends are slow songs - but if every song on an album's slow, it quickly becomes tedious.
