I uncovered some winged ants when I dug up an ants' nest in my front garden yesterday.

They didn't fly away, so I suppose they weren't ready yet.

It would be romantic to think it had fluttered all the way to your garden from Surrey, but there could be a more prosaic explanation. Perhaps Prince Andrew has been in your local area after sampling another chain restaurant in his local area.

Strangely enough, I had a receipt experience too, just last week. I was rotating a navy leather bomber jacket to the 'to be worn in the next few months' wardrobe and in one of the pockets I found a receipt from Balans, from July 2002.

I can't think how slim the chances of that coming to be in there were, because I rarely paid for my 3/4am meals there. It was usually packed enough to get away with just perching by someone else's table, vaguely intimating to the waiters that you were part of that group, and then simply vanishing into the dawn after you were done.

While I was giving my car a 10-minute idle I noticed a flying ant had got inside. And there were 4 more dead ones in a spider's web on the nearside mirror.

A request to become involved in a family dispute.

The front door flew off its hinges shortly before the turn of the hour and my son announced that an argument with my mother had taken place, so he'd left.

Evidently he'd said that one of her favourite framed photos - of her as a young woman and her dad, looked like Ghislaine and Robert Maxwell. She'd taken strong exception.

'But it does' he wailed. Well, yes, I can see why you'd think that but you know what she's like so you shouldn't have said it and you shouldn't have doubled down on it. Another door slamming, and he's now in his room listening to drill music.

I'll deal with it tomorrow. She's probably had a drink or two in the time it took him to storm back here, so it won't be productive for anyone to address it now.
