This two part documentary on BBC4 called A Change of S*x from the '80s is absolutely engrossing.

So stark, sober, completely devoid of naff emotional music - very affecting.

The breast 'augmentation' consultation being totted up at £550 was jaw-dropping (even if it was about 30 years ago).

I'm impressed by the cooly, albeit somewhat outdated, manner and language used by the consultants and surgeons and their utter commitment to an individual's choice to physically be who they are.

Also, the relationship between the woman and her partner is so sweet.

I spoke too soon.

She's just visited some *rseh*le psychiatrist who seems to think he's the overlord of the matter and whose nose has been put royally out of place.

A psychiatrist FFS.

It's a comfort to know that he's probably dead now.

It's dreadful to see how she has to walk on eggshells in this 'meeting' despite clearly wanting to lamp the horribly cold, passive aggressive, rime-encrusted buffer in the head with the corner of one of his framed diplomas.

I saw/read about it in 1980 and indeed it was an important point of enlightenment for the young Countess.

The evil psychiatrist was Dr John Randell of the Charing Cross GIC. Luckily things had moved on when I attended the same clinic 35 years later, and everyone was very nice to me.
