Top of the Pops 1986 beginning this evening everybody!

10 years of Top of the Pops repeats!

Did anyone else watch the "Story of 1986" programme last weekend? They played clips of Top of the Pops performances and some of the acts were interviewed, along with journalists of the day. It seems 1986 isn't exactly regarded as a classic year due to being made up of novelty songs (Spitting Image etc.), film songs (Take My Breath Away etc.) and cover versions aplenty.

Isn't 1986 one of Fangirl's favourite years?

Indeed it is! My interest begins on February 23rd 1986, in the When The Going Gets Tough era.

I also understand that by 1986 some of the British bands who had dominated (on both sides of the Atlantic) in 1983-1985 struggled somewhat in 1986 onwards, or even vanished altogether, leaving a bit of a vortex - which later got filled by Stock Aitken Waterman and house choons.

I always mix up 21st Century Boy by them with Sonic Boom Boy by Westworld. I taped the latter onto my 6th and final 'Good Top 40 Singles' tape in early spring 1987.

Butters, please wake me up when it gets to Living Doll, which headed up the first tape in that series in 1986.
