It was a pleasant and surprising album that possibly needed a bit more fire and a bit less David Gates.

I was quite disarmed by this album.
Expecting a fairly bland, albeit mostly pleasant album of slightly drippy songs, it instead showed frequent examples of proper 'oomph!', which helped the David Gates numbers massively.
Ultimately, the big (David Gates) hit is an irresistibly perfect combo of chords and key changes and that last track was gently effective as a coda, but it was the more punchy, down-home blues-country-rock numbers that kept the whole album chugging along.
In summary, a pleasant listen and a pleasant surprise.
Which always makes for a surprisingly pleasant listen.
