My theory is that R->L and upwards simulate the way we read - left-to-right and downwards - thus making the scrolling text easy to read, cos we can lazily keep our gaze where it is and just let the text move past.

The opposite directions make the scrolling text difficult to read for the corresponding opposite reason.

What 'bout readers of Arabic?

I'm guessing that this interface was customised for speakers of L->R languages.
