I've been threatening to create this boring thread for a while.
I've just found this "layby" where lorries park up just off the A1 near Doncaster, but upon closer inspection one notices rusting cats eyes in the middle of the crumbling tarmac, suggesting it isn't just a random layby but was once an actual part of the A1 London to Edinburgh Great North Road before that part got bypassed. "Robin Hood's Well", next to an even older abandoned bit of road. The trunk road must have been right next to this once upon a time.

I find those ox-bow roads a bit depressing, because often the local landowner has helped themselves to bits of them.
