Re: The awesome and terrifying Upgrade thread
I see that one does SATA as well.
I'm guessing in both cases you have to sort out your own power supply to actually spin the disc?

Unless it's a little ones, the little laptop ones that takes the power off the cable.

Only if it's a 3.5" drive. If it's 2.5", the USB provides the power to the drive.Fangirl Three wrote:I see that one does SATA as well.

I had a power pack for one of those, it literally blew it's top off when it prematurely reached End of Life.

I've just ordered a new WiFi card for my laptop.
And this one has bluetooth!

Re: The awesome and terrifying Upgrade thread
In the last two weeks I have:
Doubled my RAM.
Replaced the old HDD with a new SSD.
Replaced the optical drive with an HDD.
Installed a new WiFi/bluetooth card.
Total cost: £36.
The only thing left is to replace the CPU with a more powerful one.
That will have to wait, as it's more expensive and more riskier.
At some point, I'd like to see if I can get the RAM up to the 16GB limit but I don't currently have the financial security to be spending money on 16GB of RAM that might not work.

My laptop's now connected to the Internet via my phone's bluetooth.

I'm going to do a speedtest to see how it compares with my broadband.

Download: 1.2 mbps, compared to my broadband's 2.4 mbps.
Upload: 1.0 mbps, compared to my broadband's 0.4 mbps.
Ping: 61, compared to my broadband's 38.
I don't have a clue what ping is.

I have a 4G phone due to arrive tomorrow. Isn't that supposed to be 10 times faster than my current 3G?

If it works, I can dump my landline and just use mobile Internet, saving me nearly £25 a month.

My plan is that the phone pays for itself, thanks to the fall in my Internet costs.

Re: The awesome and terrifying Upgrade thread
I currently pay £38 a month for my landline, fixed broadband and mobile data combined.
I only use 40-45 GB of data a month, from all sources.
I can get 50 GB of mobile data a month for just £15.
Therefore, if I go mobile only, I save £23 a month.
