The awesome and terrifying Upgrade thread
As you may know, I'm currently upgrading my eight-year-old laptop to turn it into a state-of-the-art mega-computer.
So far, I've doubled its RAM and replaced the old hard drive with an SSD. Now I'm on the veritable brink of replacing its DVD player with a 2nd hard drive.
After that, I'm aiming to replace its WiFi card with one that's faster and can do Bluetooth.
After that, I'm hoping to replace its CPU with something more potent.
Money spent so far: £30.
Anyrodeup, this is where we can post all the latest news on any changes we may be making to our computing equipment.

I wonder if I could get an illuminated keyboard?

I've just discovered that, with Linux installed, my laptop can accommodate 16GB of RAM, not the manufacturer's recommended 6GB.

What other Paul McCartney albums can it accommodate?

I have added, "Increasing it to 16GB of RAM," to my list of aspirations.
And to think, 2 weeks ago, it only had 2GB of RAM.

My hard drive caddy's arrived. I'm about to try and replace my laptop's DVD player with a 2nd hard drive.

I've just discovered the 500GB external hard drive I bought 4 years ago is actually a 1TB hard drive.
Someone in the factory must have put it in the wrong box.

That's reminded me that my 500G external hard drive has been locked up in my filing cabinet at work for 4 months.
Unless the security guards have stolen it.

My adaptor cable's arrived and I've been able to connect my ancient IDE hard drive to my laptop and, for the first time in eight years, see what's on it.

There's nothing on it worth bothering about.
