I heard pumping going on, which I take to mean he was inflating the Expansion Vessel.

It's a thing that stops these newfangled unvented hot water cylinders from exploding.
Actually though they're more middlefangled these days, as combi boilers are even more newfangled and don't need a cylinder at all.

I haven't had the heating on for a couple of months now. Hopefully that'll be it until November, or late October at the earliest.
