They were apparently a Rolling Stones Cover band, who tried their luck.

I wonder which band Barclay James Harvest are trying to sound like on this track - and which song it's supposed to sound like.

Bl*mey, Wendi - have you heard the 1972 Jerry Rafferty LP Can I Have My Money Back?
I'm guessing you have, but if not, I don't think I've heard an artist trying to sound more like Macca (rather than just The Beatles) in my life.

The spirit of Ram is strong in that one. 
I've heard bits of Can I Have My Money back but not all of it. The only Gerry Rafferty albums I've heard all the way through are City to City, Night Owl and Snakes and Ladders. There are McCartney influences show through on them, from time to time.
Having said that, Love Awake by Macca has always sounded like pure Gerry Rafferty, to me.
