I always wondered why it wasn't Scumbag University or Scumbag Poly.

I suppose it's part of the University of London?

It's because half the writers went to Christ's College, Cambridge, and that's how they thought University Names worked.

(not true, well the first bit, anyway.)

It might be an early example of political correctness gone mad.

If they'd called TYOs team Scumbag Polytechnic (which they should've done for accuracy and consistency re: their posho counterparts) then it might've'd'bn see to be sneering at all the polys that actual real people went to before they were allowed to change their names, which is what people in the Oxbridge/Redbricks/etc were doing anyway. Neutral

With "college" they could create a coverall term.

So, humour-wise, it was self-defeating and politically it was downright yeller bellied.
