Re: Bird Words
I was impressed by how the situation awakened my own inner animal. I was eating my BLT sandwich with both hands, eyeing the potential predators intently.
It ended happily though, they didn't get any of my sandwiches, and when I finished eating and started brushing the crumbs off me, they obviously recognised the gesture and came forward eagerly to pick them up off the ground.

Re: Bird Words
Btw, after checking various bird identification flowcharts I believe that the 'crows' I was describing were actually jackdaws.

Top one is a Crow.
Bottom one is a Jackdaw.
Crows are much bigger and don't have the "staring" eye.
Now, Rooks are a lot harder to tell apart from Crows, not got any pics as I don't see them very often.
I think there are Ravens down the Hythe but I have never seen one (possibly because I never go down the Hythe)

There's lots of rooks round my way. You can recognise them because they hang around in groups and have a white patch at the top of their beaks.
I think we get ravens too but it's hard to be certain, as they could just be big crows.

Rooks have got those distinctive heavy-duty beaks.

Neither do I if I can possibly help it. But sometimes I have to go to B&Q (which was supposedly going to be turned into a Sainsburys, but it never happened).

Re: Bird Words
I just got back from getting jabbed and there was one of these beaky little devils hopping about on all the flower baskets hanging in the communal balcony. ![love them](/users/3715/63/33/29/smiles/4294744464.gif)
A coal t*t, I think...

Re: Bird Words
I've just seen a raven.
I know it was a raven because it was riding on thermals to get altitude before flying off, and the Internet tells me that crows don't ride thermals.

Re: Bird Words
I've just seen a huge great big bird of prey swooping down to try and catch a wood pigeon. ![Excited](/users/3715/63/33/29/smiles/4075307247.gif)

Re: Bird Words
You will be relieved to know the pigeon evaded its attack and escaped into the woods. ![happy](/users/3715/63/33/29/smiles/2622191953.gif)

Re: Bird Words
It was a bit far away but what I could make out was that the rear edge of its wings was black and there was some sort of white area in the centre, with hints of reddy-brownness to the rest of it.

Re: Bird Words
From my in-depth research, I have narrowed it down to a buzzard or a golden eagle.
I shall check on Twitter, to see if any golden eagles have been reported in Sheffieldshire lately.
About 15 years ago, I did encounter one locally. It was perched up in a tree while a man with a van was tinkling a bell at it and calling its name, trying to lure it down.

Re: Bird Words
The most recent Twitter mention of a golden eagle, that I can find, dates back to 2011.
