If you use the Brave browser, it automatically blocks ads without YouTube knowing about it.

I did something to my install of Brave to stop it updating, but I can't remember quite what, so I'll download it again.
The old one was showing Youtube adverts. I can't live like that

I just turn the sound off and hold my hand in front of the screen so I can only see the skip countdown , until the ad finishes.
