Yesterday morning in Paisley it was 12 C, and over Shap it was cold and rainy and the clouds were blowing across the road, but by the time I got to Kettering it was 25 C and I was roasting. I had to sleep with the hotel room window open all night.

It's all this jubilee stuff that's caused the weather to act up. The last one brought a miserable summer too. I remember running out of petrol in some of the heaviest rain, thunder, and lightning I've ever known, and carrying my green can to a petrol station over two miles walk away, before struggling back with it filled up. Not one car stopped to offer me a lift. I was saturated down to my underwear, and my shoes were covered in the grass cuttings from the verges I'd had to journey along. When I eventually got home and looked in a full length mirror, I looked like a shipwreck survivor - although one that had only clung on to life through luck.
