I've just had 8kg of rice delivered from an online wholefood place. The poor DPD chappie could barely carry it.

I also bought 2kg of wheat grains, as apparently you can cook and eat them like rice, and I wanted to try that.

Well, I did make my exhausting breakfast.

And I did eat it.

Now I feel exhausted.

It seems like such a long time ago that the man across the way was performing. Time and dates seem to have so little meaning now. I woke up this morning having had such a boring dream that the only detail I can recall is sitting on the floor looking at a video recorder, which told me it was the 1st of June. At which I exclaimed out loud 'the 1st of June!'.

What does an American breakfast involve?

Hash browns made from scratch, scrambled eggs, 'special' grilled tomatoes, toast.

Does sound delicious.

Complicated making sure it's all ready at the same time though, I venture.

The time-consuming and frankly wearisome part is the hash browns.

Grate the spuds (I keep the skins on) into a bowl.

Lightly salt them and set aside.

Prepare the tomatoes (cut in half and sprinkled with some salt, sugar, pepper, mixed herbs and a dash of Worcestershire sauce), pop them in the oven at a highish heat.

Return to the potatoes and wring out as much of the liquid from the grated potato as you can and transfer them to another bowl.

Add freshly ground pepper and fry in vegetable or sunflower oil that's already been heated fairly high in a non-stick frying pan.

Using a spatula/fish slice shape the grated potatoes into 'patties' pressing them down firmly.

Then there's the fl*pping flipping. Colbert

Oh. I'd only eat the toast. Plain if there was no honey.

Do you need to follow a recipe for the toast?

Yes. And watch over it carefully so it doesn't burn. My son placed a label on the toaster giving three different timings in three different coloured felt tips for lightly warmed, medium regular, and crunchy. So that helps a lot.

Are toasters the new televisions? The thing that everyone who hasn't got one likes to mention so you know they aren't that demographic.

Maybe we could all have a whip round and send one to your PO Box. You can get them for under a tenner - I think my current one was 8.99, purchased after the previous one blew up and nearly killed me one morning while I was lighting a cigarette.

Hello.

Yes, we should. We can't have you going without a toaster, or bothering the neighbours with a couple of slices of bread and a request each morning.

I have bad luck with electrical appliances myself, so I know how it feels. Three different brand new hoovers broke down on me in a row, within a single week - all within the first try. And I should've learned my lesson by now about lighting cigarettes off of toasters - I once had a one night stand with a man in a Battersea high rise who had sustained arm burns requiring skin grafts after using his three bar fire for the same purpose.

I don't have a toaster because I have a perfectly good eye-level grill on my old style cooker.

I inherited a toaster once but I couldn't get it to do both sides evenly, so I threw it away and stuck to using the grill.

Oh well, we're not having a whip round. You'll just have to use the grill.

I boiled some of the above-mentioned whole wheat grains, and had them with peppery lentils and onions, they were lovely.

They'll give my digestion something to get a good grip on too, I shouldn't wonder.

I made slow cooked lamb today, with potatoes mashed in the jus, and broccoli. Delicious.

And there's more lamb left over for lamb sandwiches.
