Turns out the principal issue on the journey was glare - the sun being so low, and the road all wet and shiny, meant every time the road turned to point towards the sun, no-one could see where they were going.

There were some good bits before that though, coming down through the Borders and over Shap, all foggy/cloudy but still going 75 box

J10 smiled on me again and I went through most of the Birmingham bit at 70.

Just a short hop today, Bedford to Fanford. Not looking forward to the M11.

Actually the M11 went quite well, I was going 70 most of the way.

It's on the A14, it's the last big place before the M1/M6 junction. The idea is that tomorrow morning I'll have a head start on my latest journey north to Scotland.

Junction 10 smiled on me again yesterday, I had a trouble-free passage of Birmingham.

It w**d down with rain though the whole way from Kettering as far as Preston. Around Knutsford it was coming down so hard that the traffic slowed to 35mph.

I noticed btw that the revamping of the M1/M6/A14 junction has completely cut the local road off from the junction. It just goes sadly underneath. This also means you can't get onto the M6 from the M1 southbound any more. Unless you go via Google Streetview 2009 view.

This also means that the last 7 miles of the A14 westbound lead only to motorways. All non-motorway traffic is sternly ordered to leave at junction 1. I looked to see if there were any escape routes before the M1, but I didn't see any.

I got on the M6 at Junction 10 last week, for just one junction, leaving at Junction 11 for Cannock Chase. I briefly thought of you as I zoomed past my most local motorway services - that you've been to but I never have. :D I came back the same way too.

Because of the new bridge instalment roadworks at Junction 10 there are currently no traffic lights on the giant and usually chaotic motorway island so it's now a free for all, but being New Year time it was very empty. The motorway itself was the emptiest I've known it in a long time too - no overhead gantry 60mph limits or anything. happy

I went under J10 yesterday afternoon. I had toyed with the idea of stopping at Butterfield Services, but in the end decided to press on to Corley instead.

I have to drive to Lancashire today.

As I'm starting from Essex rather than Northamptonshire as usual, I have to decide where to stop for lunch. Birmingham is half-way, but it's always best to get to the other side before stopping.

So as well as a classic J10 passage, a halt at Hilton Park Services is very much in prospect!

I regret to say that I did not.

I had to stop at Corley for a w*e, and while I was there I recalled that it was a weekday, rather than the usual Saturday on which I traverse Birmingham, and that there'd probably be a lot of slow traffic which would mean I could eat sandwiches and crisps in comfort while driving. So I got me a BLT and some pop chips and did just that.

I was right about the traffic too. While stuck at SpagJunc I realised that the football stadium you can see to the left of the road is actually Villa Park (or whatever Aston Villa's ground is called nowadays, the Travelodge Arena or something probably).

I did go under J10 as usual though. They're making good progress on the new bridges.

I don't know much about football but I do know that is indeed Villa Park you can see near Spaghetti Junction, then a bit further north near to the RAC building and closer to the motorway is Walsall's ground over on the right. You can see the people sitting in the stands if driving past at the right time.

Ooh I will look out for Walsall so I can 'bag' another football ground.

Thread!

After a very pleasant evening at my friend's in Bolton, I have to press on to Paisley today.

Checking out the mighty St. Mirren?

They've moved from the wonderfully named Love Street.
