I'm currently using my phone as a wi-fi router for my laptop. I've only tethered it by a USB cable in the past.

It seems to be working Ok, so far.

I've just done a speedtest.

It's downloading at 3.25 MBpS, compared to 2.5 for my landline.

It's uploading at 2.32 MBpS, compared to 0.2 for my landline.

It is a 3G phone.

The sim card is capable of 4G, though.

Your landline internet is very poor, it makes mine look positively modern.

How come connections are so slow in a megaregion supercity?

I've no idea. Apparently, I only live about a mile from the nearest exchange.

Exactly 0.75 GB used yesterday, well inside my 1GB-a-day limit.

My backup mobile phone is definitely finished. I've tried the '2 minute hard reset', and also putting it in the freezer overnight (which used to be a way of resetting car stereo security codes, I tried it as a long shot), and neither of them worked.

So I have no choice but to buy a new one.

I have ordered a new phone for £149.

The cheapest one I looked at was £19 and the most expensive was £1374!

Phones have the widest price range of anything I've considered buying.

I always buy mine 2nd-hand on eBay, and haggle.

I got a text this morning saying a parcel was coming between 1.20 and 2.20pm.

But the people I actually ordered the phone from haven't notified me of its despatch like their web site says they will.

I had to have a phone to put the SIM from the one that's broken down in, because a certain acquaintance of mine only has that number, and they'll need to contact me before Monday.

So I bought a second hand dumb phone from a place in town I discovered today, called C*X. It's great, like being back in 2004.

One 2017 one, celebrating its retirement and assignment to light duties (for use with businesses who I don't trust not to spam me).

One secondhand one as mentioned above, for taking to places where the first two might get stolen.
