Yes. I've just paid for an engineer to come on Tuesday. Thankfully the mobile is working again, so I've been able to text a now presumably former friend to tell her she's a **** who's neither use nor ornament. Maybe she ignored my plea to ask her engineer husband to help me because I know how many people she's ****** behind his back. She's never allowed us to spend any time together without her being present. Oh well.

Did everyone here know, that washing machines have a 'fast wash' facility!? I heard two women (probably domestics) speaking in grateful terms about 'fast wash settings' when I was in that product aisle at Sainsburys, and it turns out my machine has one.

I've got my laundry on one now - 30 minutes is the given time on the display panel! I just assumed my washing machine took two and a half hours to do everything. Since the installation of my smart meter, it's been something I've become painfully aware of.

I did know about quick wash, but I don't know what compromises are being made in terms of cleaning power in order to achieve extra speed.

Quick wash can be very convenient. However, you can't use it all the time. Every so often, you have to do a wash at a higher temperature to cleanse the washing machine.

I saw a video, the other month, that said that, if you want to save energy, it can be better to use Eco-Wash setting. For some reason, even though it uses a slightly higher temperature and runs for longer, it somehow uses less energy.

Lots of machines also have a Cold Wash setting, that doesn't use hot water at all but I don't know if it's very effective.

I've got a third load on as we speak. It's so exciting. I'm running out of things that need washed. According to the instructions online (the manual would've been binned the day it arrived) there's even a setting safe for cashmere. Until now, I've been posting most of my cashmere to a woman who lives by the shores of Loch Lomond, where the items are first and finally dipped for a soft water fresh soak, before and after the main wash is completed.

I have used that when dyeing stuff.

Shortly after reading that, I was loading my washing into my parents' washing machine (which they are kindly allowing me to use) and I noticed it had an eco-wash programme, which indeed takes 50% longer than normal wash. I'm giving it a try now.

Update: eco-wash proved very effective. And my mum is going to try it too now.

I read that there as a 'Lots of machines also have a Cold War setting'. I thought perhaps you had a washing machine made in East Germany.

The real tragedy of the Cold War setting is that if you really want your clothes to be clean it's advisable to launch a full scale nuclear strike against them.
