I think the top one, where he's looking to his left (camera right) is the original.

That is because he is American and is looking at the oncoming traffic on the right-hand side of the road, to see if whoever he's waiting for has arrived at the building on whose doorstep he's sitting.

I think so too because the doorknob is on the right-hand side of the door, and outside doorknobs and handles tend to be on the right, as most people are right-handed.

What a great bit of investigative journalism.

I looked for the usual "flipping" clues - a side parting, a mole on the face etc. but couldn't find anything of the like on Lionel to work out which would be the original photo. I wondered if he had a typical arrangement of his rings, but I couldn't be bothered to get that deep into my own investigation.

Buttons tend to be on the right, which would mean the top one is indeed the original photo.

I've never thought about that. But yes, all the places I've lived in have had the doorknob on that side of the front door, with one exception.
