Re: Signpost extravaganza
To be 355 miles from Derby you'd have to be somewhere up by Pitlochry, and that place could also be 100 miles from Edinburgh. But it would be about 170 miles from Bamburgh, not 24.
Similarly Amble is about 24 miles from Bamburgh and 100 miles from Edinburgh, but only 190 miles from Derby.
There's only one place in the UK called Bamburgh, I checked.

Re: Signpost extravaganza
Interesting. There can't be many UK road signs with mileages to places in other countries.

I've been up and down the M6 many times over the years and never seen one that high! 100ish miles to Glasgow, definitely, around Carlisle.
You were quite right of course, the first sign on the M6 is on the Carlisle bypass. Glasgow 95 Edinburgh 98.

It's also (mildly) interesting as those miles include what will then get changed to km over the border.

Re: Signpost extravaganza
Do they have to change which side of the road they drive on when they cross the border?

Re: Signpost extravaganza
I've been past this location in Walsall tens of times over the years but only yesterday did I happen to notice this lovely little ancient milestone on the side of the road, and I've just managed to track it down.

This sign is a bit unusual
The distances to Linwood and Bridge of Weir are unusual on a roundabout sign.

Speaking of distances, I saw this yesterday, and I'm fairly sure it's the first mention of that London on the A1 'Route confirmation after junction' signs.

Re: Signpost extravaganza
I've worked out you can drive the 900ish miles/14 hours from John O' Groats to Land's End on main roads and motorways using just 15 consecutive destination signposts as navigation.
Start
1. Signpost in John O' Groats south to Wick
2. At Wick there's a sign to Inverness
3. Around Inverness there's a sign to Perth
4. Then Glasgow
5. Carlisle
6. Preston
7. Birmingham
8. Worcester
9. Gloucester
10. Bristol
11. Exeter
12. Bodmin
13. Redruth
14. Penzance
15. Once in in Penzance there's a sign to Land's End
Arrive
If only it was that quick.

Re: Signpost extravaganza
Irl that would start with being stuck behind a lorry/RV for 124 miles on the A9.
When you finally got to the motorway at Stirling, granted you'd have a decent run as far as about the Blackpool rurnoff on the M6.
Then it's sheer misery all the way till Michaelwood services on the M5.
I can't vouch for what happens after that, the last time I went that way my now ex-best-friend's husband was driving, and he opted to go at 90mph.
Worst holiday of my life that was, we were all 3 of us in a cottage in the back end of nowhere near St Austell, and the only entertainment was a free newspaper giveaway DVD of Carry On Camping. I'd watch it and think, goodness I am so the Charles Hawtrey third wheel in this scenario, I can't believe they haven't cottoned on.
But, it was the first time that I noticed that CH's character goes away at the end with the hippies, presumably achieving some kind of closure?
