you'd have a decent run as far as about the Blackpool rurnoff on the M6.
Then it's sheer misery all the way till Michaelwood services on the M5.
What if you did it at 3am? Apart from when they shut the motorway, only the first two lanes will be full of HGVs.

Sheffield 44 - from just outside of Lincoln.
I can't believe I didn't comment on this before, but that is an extremely unusual sign, combining as it does distances (without a route confirmation number!) and junction directions.

It's my opinion that there's a lot of local latitude allowed in these sign variations. Cf the weird distances on the roundabout sign I posted above, or the way that the River Wyre and Lancaster Canal crossings on the M6 are signalised by signs with non-standard, but aesthetically pleasing light blue text on a white background.
Elsewhere you'll find these river crossing signs in dull black and white.

Yesterday I spotted this, which I think is the actual winner.

Were you paying homage in the area? I saw something about her statue - either just unveiled, or vandalised, or causing discontent, or maybe it was just a debate about whether to have one. Can’t recall, saw it in passing.

I hate seeing the name on the signs. But I have to use the A1, it's so much more efficient. Needs must.

I drove past this the other day. First mileage sign to London on the M6, just north of Wolverhampton.

Re: Signpost extravaganza
If they'd only have put a mileage on this first mention for London heading south near Leeds on the A1(M) rather than leaving it blank, according to my calculations it might have said 202 miles, which would be the highest in the UK.
That is if mileages are still measured to Charing Cross.

Re: Signpost extravaganza
On my way from Perth to Essex yesterday I used the A1 to avoid traffic on the M11. And I realised that the roundabout at Buckden is the first place on the A1 where you have to give way, when coming south.
But where is the equivalent point going north? It seems to be at the ambiguously-named Scremerston Roundabout in Northumberland. Between there and Buckden you can drive 305 miles before being made to give way again.

I like stats like that.
I'm sure I once worked out that I could get from my previous home on the edge of Dudley to rural Mid Wales without going past any traffic lights - probably not including single pelican crossings just for pedestrians.
But in more recent years that changed when they built a big new estate in a more rural bit nearby and added traffic lights on the main road that you often had to stop at.

I also remember being mildly excited when I drove into Cornwall from Junction 2 of the M5 at Oldbury (near Birmingham) without the car ever stopping. Roughly 230 miles/3hrs 30mins.
I guess the same could be done going north to Scotland, though I might have to stop for a w*e going that far.

How inconsiderate.

I’m sure you could rig together some contraption with a pipe going out the window, to allow you to remain seated at 90mph, if you really committed to the task.
I’m sure I read on here the other day that Wendi has three spare funnels. They might help.

Re: Signpost extravaganza
Traffic lights are more important than people think. When I'm in Scotland, there are two choices of route from Paisley to East Kilbride. One is 7 miles shorter, but has no fewer than 13 sets of traffic lights, which on average delay me 9 minutes in total. So it's quicker to go the long way.
Now, on Sunday I drove non-stop from Perth to the traffic lights on the roundabout at Penrith - 130 miles. Those lights keep breaking, but yesterday they were working well enough to stop me.
Incidentally, on Sunday's journey I drove on (among others) the A91, the M80, the M74, the M6, the A507, the A428 and the A120. Missing out only on numbering sectors 3 and 2.

That's the sliproad that starts in Ireland and finishes in Northern Ireland. The whole border area is infested with spam signs, it's worse than the traffic lights in Glasgow.

I haven't been down this way for a good while, and I knew that Felixstowe was signposted once you got onto the A14 heading east, but it's now included on signposts just outside of Coventry on the M6!
Surely this is one of the highest signpost mileages - to somewhere other than London - and a small town at that!

Small town, big port.
I used to pass that sign often, until I got utterly fed up with the M6 and started coming south on the A66/A1(M) instead.
