On NYE I made myself classic Champagne c*cktails.

I used crémant instead of Champagne though.

So:

1 cube of raw cane sugar in a glass.
Soaked with Angostura bitters and a shot of cognac until the cube breaks down a little.
Top off with with fizzy pop.

Anyway, all that palaver involved me having to buy an actual bottle of Angostura bitters.

Y'know, the stuff...

Anyway, it's an pretty great ingredient.

Gives a drink a nice sophisticated edge and a slight boozy kick.

However...

I've realised, if you smell it or taste it raw...

It smells and tastes exactly like...

I'll be staying home alone to drink heavily this evening. The likelihood of meeting people who think they have anything to celebrate tonight is far too high to risk going out.

The other side of the argument is that anyone actually celebrating tonight deserves to have a pint glass smashed in their face. box

I had my weekly drink-free day yesterday, and I feel splendid this morning, despite having had to get up at 3.30.

I have just made an extreme impulse buy (I honestly think it's the 1940s label that swayed me - that and the 50% ABV)...

I can't get anything exotic at the moment because I can only shop at the Co-op and the Tesco Express. The only choice I've got is Smirnoff or own brand.

Try some Gewürztraminer.

It may surprise you.

I think you've got quite a sweet tooth where booze is concerned and Gewürztraminer is really spicy, medium dry and with strong rosewater, lychee and guava-ey notes.

I recommend a rich and heady Shiraz. None in particular - just ask for exactly that and the command will be understood.
