2/5 lot of words describing the songs, print jurno still not up on us Napster Spotify generation shifty that makes all that pointless, tell us something we don't know, give us a good reason to listen to, or not listen to,  this album, say something fresh for these modern times. Gorilla No

Punchy Opening Sentence! Like I was taught in NME Writting School, I've seen better reviews on Buzzfeed.

I give both reviews 4/5 because they said nice things about the album and agreed with each other. box

Shrill, tells you how her speakers connect to the sounds system. Gets to the point, but I'm not feeling it.

Re: Review the Reviews of Egypt Station!

Post by The Call of the Wendigo on Sun Sep 09, 2018 9:35 pm

Here is my review, which is definitive.

1. Opening Station.  Sound effects and stuff. People compare it to the opening of Sgt Pepper. Reminds me of the beginning to Tug of War.

2. I Don't Know. A solid, well-crafted piano ballad with a beautiful intro, surprising harmonic changes and strange lyrics about crows and dogs. 7/10.

3. Come On to Me! Ian Dury and the Blockheads meets Siouxsie and the Banshees' Peek-a-Boo. These are good things to sound like. A good stomping, remorseless chant of a thing. 8/10.

4. Happy with You. Duff lyrics but a lovely song reminiscent of Put It There, with a wonderful guitar sound. Reminiscent of Peter Gabriel's Solsbury Hill. 7/10.

5. Who Cares. Not keen. It's OK but not as rocky as it should be. sounds like unused bonus track from Flaming Pie. 6/10.

6. Fuh You. Filled with catchy hooks and squeaky voices. Sounds nothing like anything he's ever done before. Would have made a great bonus track on McCartney II. 9/10.

7. Confidante. A lovely and quirky ballad about a guitar. Hints of Tug of War, especially in the instrumental part, bolstered by a descending three-note hook that you can't believe has never been used before on a record. 9/10.

8. People Want Peace. Weakest track on the album. Overly familiar message and clearly owes too much to Give Peace a Chance. 5/10.

9. Hand in Hand. A great song let down somewhat by the weakness of his voice. The pan pipe solo is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. 7/10.

10. Dominoes. Catchy, Wings style Pop with great percussion. Backing vocals reminiscent of I Saw the Light by Todd Rundgren. 8/10.

11. Back in Brazil. A strange Latin dance thing with an enigmatic ending. 8/10.

12. Do It Now. It's like an epic remake of the Button Moon theme tune, with added feeling. 9/10.

13. Caesar Rock. A very odd jam with a rhythm guitar reminiscent of Temporary Secretary. Would indeed sound at home on McCartney II as well. 7/10.

14. Despite Repeated Warnings. Multi-faceted suite about a mad captain sailing his ship towards disaster. Hints of George Michael's Praying For Time. Everyone else sees it as a political parable appropriate to their world view but I see it as a sequel to Wanderlust and a prequel to Morse Moose and the Grey Goose, which is a thing that gives me pleasure. Suffers from not having the blatantly stoned lunacy of that latter track. 7/10.

15. Station II. Sound effects and stuff.

16. Hunt You Down/Naked/C-Link. Awesome. Three tracks that have nothing to do with each other but fit together perfectly; a proper rocker that goes into a quirky and drunken sounding lurch around before moving into an instrumental that sounds like it's his first ever attempt to sound like Pink Floyd. 9/10.

Overall, I'd rank it slightly below his last album New because I don't think its highs are as high as those of that album but its remarkably consistent in a way his albums rarely are. I would say it's as near to being a 21st Century Band on the Run as one could expect to hear.

Overall score:  7.6/10

Here's my definitive review:

Egypt Station is Paul McCartney's 18th album or something. I've not listened to it, lol.

Good sound, too long intro. "toe tapping", nice thumbnail.
