He'd be literally pointing at a guitarists fretboard while he played to show him what notes and chords he wanted them to hit and at what time.

The horn samples sound a lot more realistic than the marimba ones or whatever it is they're supposed to be.

At least everyone knew that he was studio fascist.
When he was in the MoI in the late '60s, Lowell George made the mistake of suggesting they record a song he'd written and Zappa said "well, go and start your own band" and fired him on the spot.
