My feeling is that it was by and large hrobbish, but that - in combination of it being a lovely Nu-HotW group running-commentary and the fact I need to feel positive about stuff right now - it seemed to transcend it's obvious awfulness.
Again, like "I Just Called to Say I Love You" - cr*p and naff and bitty and seemingly piecemeal, but not bad in a moral sense.
Like the Ewoks.
Please don't make me listen to it ever again though.

This is def. giving me 10cc vibes.
Good grief.
This.
It's like Macca was stoned and 10cc came on the radio and he thought "oh, I can knock that rubbish into a c*cked hat".
Or he and George Martin had passed out and a 10cc sneaked into the studio and ruined it, cackling as he did it.

Wasn't this the First World War One? Or am I getting confused?
It was supposed to be a double album but they couldn't get it all finished on time, so they released it as two separate albums, just over a year apart. He called this one Tug of War and the other one Pipes of Peace. The WWI one is the title track of the second album and incorporates some musical phrases from Tug of War, what with them having been meant to be on the same album.
Everyone else thinks the second album is worse than the first.
I prefer the second.
Denny is on them both.

Not massively. The only track on it that's in that kind of vein is Tug of Peace, towards the end of the album.

Breaking Learning alert!
"Peter ("Sleazy" Christopherson) had a habit of surprising Storm and me with his particular outlook on life. Hipgnosis were once asked to design a cover for Paul McCartney for his album Tug Of War. You couldn’t find a more conservative fellow in the album cover department than Paul McCartney yet, knowing this, Peter presented a picture, beautifully crafted, of a man hanging himself, surrounded in gold leaf, in the style of Gustav Klimt. Paul said politely, “Just not my image.” Pity, as it would have been a brave move. I think I got a bit of stick too, for being audacious enough to show that idea to Paul."
