When I was driving back on the A12 from Fanchester to my parents' house, 3 cars went past me really fast. That's nothing new, but they were shortly followed by 2 police cars, and one of those cars they have that look like ordinary ones but have blue lights in the headlights.

And when I got to Rivenhall the traffic all stopped for 15 minutes, and when it got going again, the police were all walking round with actual guns.

That filled me with defiance and wildness, so when they were out of sight, I drove the rest of the way at 80, which I never do normally.

I'm very unamused. I've been summoned to the school this week, to discuss something disgraceful my son is responsible for. There's a girl who's maybe got a little crush, she buys him expensive gifts - which he encourages and accepts. She's even brought a couple here directly, so I can pass them on to him. Last week, he threw her latest offering in a bin, while his friends all laughed at her. As if that wasn't bad enough, I've been given an outline of the cruel things he said to her as she ran away in tears. She left the premises and ran all the way home. I'm so embarrassed. He recognizes all the ways it was wrong, and told me he doesn't really know why he did it, which I think is probably the truth.

They were amenable to my suggestion - I won't force him to apologize to someone who might not want to hear it anyway. So with the consent of this girl and her family, I'll take him to a couple of rooms in school, their home address, or another venue at their convenience - I'll sit with her while he's through in another room explaining himself to her parents, and hearing whatever they have to say. Then, if he is sufficiently moved and she wants to hear it, he can say sorry to her directly - and will hopefully learn that 'thank you but f*** off' is just as likely as 'let's be friends', and behaving that way to someone isn't clever - if anything it's putting your fate and your feelings entirely in their hands, and that's really stupid.

tl;dr There were no swords at all, the police got it wrong and held everyone up for no reason
