An embarrassing episode earlier. I took a taxi, and his card machine was broken. Just as well I'd taken a £20 note from a machine then. Wrong - in traffic and with one wrong turn, it was £22 exactly.

I ran all the way up the stairs to get his £2, couldn't find any money anywhere, ran all the way back down to tell him, and he started tutting and muttering - this is what I'd planned all along, f***ing con woman, bold as brass, typical of the area, fur coat no knickers, etc.

A complete stranger turned into the road, and I begged her to help. She managed to scrape together £1.80 in change, and I'd found 14p in my jacket pocket, leaving him with a 6p shortfall. After more of the same, he finally drove off.

Just had a phonecall - friend of my mothers was feeling unwell, so she had some tests and was getting the results before the weekend. So, she found out she had inoperable cancer just a few days ago, and died yesterday. She was such a kind person, not a particularly lucky life. Didn't get to retire or meet her grandchild - and only had a handful of days to get her head round the diagnosis. So cruel to think she didn't get to have a final summer.

I just feel very sad for her - it's so fast. From the agony she was in she wasn't expecting good news, but nobody expected her to be dead in under a week.

It is very sad, but maybe - if I could choose how long I could have a painful terminal illness - I would prefer a week or so rather than months.
