Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

Q: Who is the main protagonist of Charles Dickens' novel Gr8 Expectations?

a) Oliver Twist?
b) Philip 'Pip' Pirrip?
c) David Copperfield?
d) Nicholas Nickleby?

Contestant:

"I'm not sure.

I'm torn between A and B - although it could be C...

I'll have to ask the audience"

Audience average:

a) 10%
b) 40%
c) 30%
d) 20%

David Copperfield is my favourite. It was on Drama a couple of Sundays ago. Daniel Radcliffe was such a cute kid. Maggie Smith and Pauline Quirks performances had me in tears. I wanted to turn Zoe Wanamakers Jane Murdstone violently onto the streets myself, and have Mr Murdstone transported to the colonies.

Great Expectations is the better book, but Nicholas Nickleby is the one I actually prefer to read.

I fell out of love with the D-Copp because I simply cannot believe in 'David the novelist'.

I'm basing my opinions solely on the David Lean screen adaptation.

On reflection, I can't recall ever reading a Dickens novel of any sort or stripe.

I haven’t read them either. I do actually own a copy of A Christmas Carol and I had an illustrated Oliver Twist I liked leafing through, but I’ve never read a Dickens novel. I go on the television adaptions.

For Oliver, I don’t think the black and white David Lean adaption can be beaten.

I've read all of them except Barnaby Rudge and Martin Chuzzlewit.

Have you seen his version of GE, CT?

It's even better.

IMO, that is.

OT is really good as well though.

No, I haven’t, I’ll look it up, I have great expectations that it’s probably on YouTube. Until I no longer had a video recorder I had the OT video which I’d had for years. It’s the best version, I’ve watched it many times. I particularly loved the bleak scene of Oliver’s mother battling through a storm while in labour. Very atmospheric.

Indeed all the references to cucumber sandwiches in that play are code, for marmalade sandwiches.

Wrote her first novel with an advance publishing deal, in a coffee shop owned by her brother-in-law.
