Gloomy coda to the album.

Re: Ry Cooder - Into the Purple valley (1972)
The song is about the hired thugs ("vigilantes") who would violently chase away migrants to California trying to escape the Dust Bowl, a man-made ecological catastrophe in the American Great Plains during the 1930s. One verse refers to the murder of Preacher (Jim) Casy, a central figure in John Steinbecks' 1939 novel The Grapes of Wrath.

Re: Ry Cooder - Into the Purple valley (1972)
Ry Cooder does an infinitely better job of recording and celebrating Americana than that braggart and oaf Dick Van Dyke Van Dyke Parks.

It is over.
I'm sure he enjoyed making it but it was all too samey to hold my interest.
Now to look back at the thread and see what everybody else made of it.

Because it's an album of cover version. He's pleasant enough, but it's all done in the same perfectly pleasant polite style, just compare the magic of the Washington Philips to his cover. Or the Wonderfully creepy backing vocals on the Lead Belly original on a Monday.
In the same way why listen to Eric Clapton playing a Robert Johnson song when it's now as easy to listen to Robert Johnson doing it?
