It's not exactly true to the pure Lovecraftian vision, no.

That said, the Herbert West stories (story?) were a bit unusual in respects his oeuvre anyway (not really dealing with The Mythos, rather just a hubristic and immoral, neo-Frankensteinian ghoulish experimentator).

The fact that Re-Animator has the grubby hands of Troma, perhaps if not all over it, but hovering nearby should tell you something.

Basically, it's blackly, camply amusing, gruesomely gory, quite crude and crass* and, well, just all-round fab. Excited

*Barbara Crampton doesn't keep all of her clothes on for the entire movie**
